Alpha-lipoic acid has antioxidant activity and can scavenge free radicals both intra- and extra-cellularly. It is a part-coenzyme involved in carbohydrate metabolism and in the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). It may also help suppress vascular inflammation.
